GM Corporation (Korean pc part maker)

BTW from now on I would translate some namuwiki page for computer parts only. I do not deal with KPop articles unless if they're related to PC parts. Some grammars are fixed, and I used google translate. Namu wiki's work is available under CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 KR . (However, except for some documents and illustrations for which the license is specified)

Disclaimer: some photos are from RETRO HARDWARE YT Channel (Czechia PC HW collector), permission for photos taken from his FB page: here. Simply put: GO for it without asking lul

  • Founded: 1996
  • Disbanded: 2017
  • Website: gmc.co.kr
  • CEO: Kim Moon-cheol

A Korean computer parts company that started as MG Technology in 1996 and disappeared in 2017. By the way, the representative's name is Kim Moon-cheol similar to North Korean army personnel that sometimes show up on official KCNA TV. Main product is computer case and power supply . It was also a domestic distributor of the high-end power supply Seasonic. Representative products include the Phoong (case only) series.

The general evaluation of the product was also not bad, and it was a mid-sized company that made a fairly good entry-level or semi-high-end case. AS was good. In Playware's testing of one of their PSU in the second series of fake PSU wattage, this has worst performance. GMC however apologized and discontinued the product in question, and the improved Phoong/Pung 3 PSU was released, so the response was quick. It is different from their competitor, Corensi, that continued to sell Cheongung PSU after claiming that the test results were okay while it's not. Their PSU also has unique innovation that allows using hard drive/disc drive externally, although it requires its own cables (which used surplus units that arrived in Indonesia, Philippines, etc. lacked of.)

Low-priced cases are not developed on their own, but subcontracted, but the quality of the cases differs significantly depending on the subcontractor, and there are cases where the low-end cases are of the same quality.

Their PC case, R-2 Toast , R-3 Corona , and R-4 Bulldozer is very popular. These cases were ranked at the top of popularity in Danawa and others because of the unique design of attaching the disc drive to the outside of the case and inserting and removing the disk from the top or the bottom, and taking up less space on the front and back, but there is a demerit to this case. Vertically mounting the ODD is often seen in slim OEM PCs such as Dell, HP, Samsung, Jooyontech, etc. For the GMC R-4 Bulldozer, the disc drive is mounted at a slanted angle, upward for Toast and downward for Corona.

Left 1st: R4 Bulldozer, Left 2nd: R3 Corona, Remaining: R2 Toast.

This is R4 bulldozer, like the one on advertisement below. To unstuck the disc drive the plastic "hydraulic arms" must be deleted.

Looks more like audio player than PC. This is GMC Noblesse K1.

In particular, the narrow internal space that is slightly wider than the ATX motherboard is also fatal disadvantage. Because of this quirk, you can only use up to two hard disks , and difficulties arise if you want to use a high-end graphics card (265mm length). Of course, the temperature issue is a bonus. Also in GMC R-4 Bulldozer, the ODD tray can get stuck with plastic component (It's so easy to fix by removing the plastic "hydraulic" arm). This quirk is shared between R-2 Toast , R-3 Corona , and R-4 Bulldozer cases.

In the advertisement image, there's a picture saying that even a high-performance (9800 GTX+) graphic card can be fitted. (265mm)

snug fit.. HDD is dead.

GMC managed to become a middle-class level, but it was entangled in the Monuel accounting scandal (like Zalman) in 2014 and suffered a severe blow, and it was in a state where it was impossible to even distribute or develop new products properly. He was evicted to the outskirts of Gimpo, where the rent was cheap, and the name was attached to it, but on June 1, 2017, GMC was merged with a power supply company called Max Elite and defunct.

Max Elite now acts as official distributor of Seasonic PSU in Korea and also sells their own PSU branded as Maxwell (OEM wise it's HuiZhou XinHuiYuan Technology Co., Ltd that made Cougar and Silverstone PSUs), and case manufacturing business is just a part of history.
